Myanmar (also known as Burma) is located in South-East Asia and its capital is Nay Pyi Taw. The country has an area of 676,577 sq-km, sharing borders with Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand. It stretches over 2090 km from north to south and over 925 km from east to west. It has a 2832 km long coastline on the Indian Ocean.

Myanmar has three seasons - the rainy season, the cool season and the hot season. The rainy season is from May to October, the cool season from October to February, and the hot season from March to May. Weather is generally temperate and cool in the north and northeastern parts of the country. Temperatures vary from region to region.

Historical Background
Early civilization in Myanmar dates back to the 1st century with the archaeological evidences of the Pyu Kingdoms of Thayekhittaya, Beithano and Hanlin. The recorded Myanmar history began in the early 11th century, in the days of Bagan King Anawratha. In 1886, Myanmar fell into the British colonialism. It became an independent state on January 4, 1948.

Myanmar has eight main ethnic groups. They are Bamar, Kachin, Chin, Rakhine, Shan, Kayin, Kayah and Mon. The name 'Myanmar' embraces all the ethnic groups. Majority of the people are Bamar.

Myanmar has a population of 52 million. About 10% of the population lives in the city of Yangon, the main gateway to Myanmar.

The main religion of Myanmar is Buddhism. Over 80% of the country's population is Buddhists. There are also Christians, Muslims, Hindus and some animists.

The official language is 'Myanmar or Burmese'. The Bamar people speak Burmese while the rest have their own languages. People speak more than 100 dialects all over the country.

The basic unit of Myanmar currency is 'Kyat'. One Kyat note is divided into 100 Pyas. Bank notes valued at 10000Ks, 5000Ks, 1000Ks, 500Ks, 200Ks, 100Ks, 90Ks, 50Ks, 45Ks, 20Ks, 15Ks, 10Ks, 5Ks and 1K respectively.
