Mrauk U is one of the most famous archaeological sites which is located in the western part of the country. It had been the capital of Rakhing kings from 1430 to 1784. Famous temples in Mrauk U are Shitthaung, Andaw, Ratanabon, Dukkanthein, Laymyethna, Sakyamanaung and Kothaung. Many of Mrauk U's finest temples were built during the reign of King Minbin who had ruled the land from 1531 to 1553. Mrauk U was a successor to the ancient capital of Wethali, the remains of which are still visible to the south.
